Red Mountain the Real Deal

E-mail Print PDF

You don’t really need to look around much to figure out that Red is for real.

Start by checking out Slalom Creek. It’s right beside the hill and is undoubtedly deluxe, with gourmet kitchen, views and private mountain-side hot tubs. There are plenty of other options for accommodations at Red, but this is the best.

You want to talk about 360? At Red you can take a chair up to the top of either Granite Mountain or namesake Red Mountain and ride in any direction. If you really want to look around, however, you might want to think about hiring a guide. Mountains like these hold tons of secrets and after you make some turns on your own you’d do well to get some advice from somebody who knows better.

Also, Red has to be among the best places in Canada to do a ski or snowboard clinic, with racing coaches and powder gurus always on hand. In fact, the nearby town of Rossland has put more Canadian Winter Olympic athletes on the podium than any other place in the country and the cat and heli operations are excellent. And hey, if you’re down and can keep up with the locals, somebody will probably agree to show you around. BUT BE WARNED! These kids rip it up on the snow and off.

If you are looking for a good deal, book for Red Mountain’s annual year-end weekend. Seasonal deals tend to be great, they do get some prime late season snow dumps and the party is an all-out Canadian classic. We’d tell you all about it here but if you really want to know, you’ve got to go.

As for dining, there isn’t a huge amount of variety but there are gourmet meals to be had in places. And if you are really set on world-class cuisine (and can’t fix it yourself in the Slalom’s professional-grade kitchen) then the Town of Nelson isn’t too far away. We’d stay put though, especially deep in the freeze of winter. The powder highway is best driven carefully this time of year.

The place to be at Red is still the local chalet, which has been there since Jean-Claude Killy was in his finest form. There you’ll find picnic benches, cold beer, hot soup, and most likely, one hell of a good time.  Always a very interesting crowd mixed with hardcore mountain folk, families, and vacationing business executives, all having a good time without the separation (or pretention) of other bigger resorts. This is what the mountains do. Go Red.
