With 65cm of snow overnight, Mount Washington on Vancouver Island is now claiming the deepest natural snow pack in North America.
Much of the mountain’s best back side terrain remained closed while the snow crew took care of avalanche hazards on Friday, which means the weekend should be a blast. However, officials are warning skiers and snowboarders to stay sane.
“With such a huge amount of fresh snow on the Mountain, it is important to stay in bounds unless you are prepared for self-rescue,” says a Mount Washington official. “[This] includes having the proper avalanche gear (beacon, probe, shovel) and more importantly know how to use them.”
